A Los Angelestől nem messze található Walker kanyonban tíz évente egyszer figyelhető meg a szupervirágzás, melynek során megfelelő időjárási körülmények esetén a környező dombokat beterítik a virágok, többek között a pipacs. Az Instagram-sztárok, influenszerek ilyenkor beindulnak, a tájat nem kímélve lövik a szelfiket. Tevékenységük nyomán olyan mértékű emberáradat indult idén a völgybe, ami miatt vészhelyzetet kellett hirdetni. A természetvédők radikális lépésre szánták el magukat.

A dél-kaliforniai Lake Elsinore melletti Walker kanyonban óriási szenzációnak számít a szupervirágzásként ismert jelenség, amikor a szurdokot egyszer csak beterítik a vadvirágok, köztük az élénk narancs színű kaliforniai pipacs. Csodálatos látványt nyújt a pipacserdő, mely beteríti a dimbes-dombos tájat.

The number of people who defend their off-trail travels as not having an impact is astounding. The thing is, humans are inherently lazy. We tend to take the path of least resistance. So, if someone wants to travel to the other side of a field, and they see a slightly beaten path that may have been taken by one or two people before them, they take it. This is how new trails are formed. The hiking community calls these “social trails”. They are unofficial trails that people take as the path of least resistance from Point A to Point B. . The problem with social trails is that as they become more frequently used, they become permanent. First the vegetation is slightly disturbed. The people that follow beat the vegetation flat. Continued use compacts soils to the point that they won’t support new growth. This breaks up what was previously homogenous habit into small fractured pieces. It's not good for vegetation. It’s not good for wildlife. And it certainly doesn’t make for good pictures. . The 1st picture is from a drone taken last week by @waterproject. The 2nd is a Google Earth satellite image of the same location taken a few years ago. Notice the difference? How can someone look at these two photos side by side and say that there hasn’t been an impact? How much longer do you think this area can withstand this amount of abuse before it comes a dirt hillside with a couple of flower patches protected behind wooden fences? . The next photos are close up pictures of what these new trails look like, progressing from slightly disturbed vegetation, to fully flattened and dead vegetation, to fully compacted soils and new dirt "trails" that will require either human intervention or decades of natural forces to recover. This is the progression that we want to avoid. Resist the temptation to use social trails. Stick to the official dirt paths. They are obvious. They are generally wide enough for two or more people to walk side by side. They are a fully dirt surface with no vegetation present. A szupervirágzás csak akkor történik meg, ha megfelelő mennyiségű eső esik, optimális a hőmérséklet, és a vadabb szelek is elkerülik a környéket, ez jó, ha tíz évente egyszer összejön. Az elmúlt három évben azonban kétszer is megtörtént, idén és két évvel ezelőtt.

A jelenség azonnal a völgybe csábította az Insta-sztárokat, akik a 444.hu cikke szerint óriási károkat okoztak a területen. Fizetett posztok díszleteként használták a varázslatos helyszínt, miközben teljesen letarolták a vidéket. Annak ellenére letértek a turistaútról, hogy mindenhol táblák jelzik ennek tilalmát.

What would happen if we all choose to ignore the rules? What if we only stopped at red lights when it was convenient? Cut to the front of the checkout line when we were in rush? What kind of world would we live in? . Unfortunately, we now get to see first hand what it looks like when people choose to ignore signs telling them to stay on the trail. Ignore signs telling them to stay out of fragile ecosystems. Ignore signs telling them to practice leave no trace principles. . It’s sad to look at. It’s sad to see the physical damage that has been caused to this ecosystem in a matter of weeks. But I think it’s even more depressing to think that we share a world with people that think the rules just don’t apply to them. That they are better than everyone else. These people are out there right now, probably ignoring other rules that they think are below them. And although the impact might not be as readily apparent as it has been in our wildflower fields, those actions will have an impact. . . There is NO EXCUSE for this. Absolutely none. I don’t care if you “didn’t see the signs”. Do you go to a foreign country without doing some research and learning a few basic words in the local language? NO! So, if you live in the city, and want to go experience a different environment, do some basic research. Learn the local language, which in this case is the language of Leave No Trace. Seven simple phrases will have you acting like a local in no time. 1.Travel on durable surfaces (n popular places avoid areas where impacts are just beginning) 2. Leave what you find 3. Be considerate of other visitors 4. Dispose of waste properly 5. Respect wildlife 6. Minimize campfire impacts 7. Plan ahead and prepare . Az Insta-pörgés igazi cunamit indított be, több tízezren keltek útra a Los Angelestől egy órányi autóútra található Lake Elsinore-ba. Hatalmas dugók alakultak ki, számtalan baleset történt a közeli autópályán. A szurdokot elárasztó embertömeg kis túlzással minden megmaradt virágot letaposott – véget vetve ezzel a csodás természeti jelenségnek. A város vezetése hiába zárta le egy időre a völgybe vezető utat, mit sem segített, ahogy az sem, hogy folyamatosan tájékoztatták az embereket a kialakult helyzetről. Az sem érdekelte a turistákat, hogy a város vészhelyzetet hirdetett.

Egy ismeretlen férfi felháborodásában elindította a Public Land Hates You oldalt, mely Instagramon is megtalálható. Többek között radikális módszerekkel harcol a természetkárosítás ellen, például újraposztolja azoknak az Insta-sztároknak, influenszereknek a fotóit, akik a kanyonban fotózkodtak a virágmezőn. A férfi tevékenysége mozgalmat indított el, melynek gazdasági hatása is van, hiszen az Insta-sztárok látványos szelfijeiért cégek fizetnek, nem is kevés pénzt. A harcos természetvédőket ez hidegen hagyja, nekik az a fontos, hogy a védtelen, ám annál lenyűgözőbb helyszínek megmaradjanak eredeti szépségükben.
